EDUCATION IS CENTRAL - What this means and why choose us
Gisborne Central School is a high performing school. As the oldest school in Gisborne, the school has a long history of outstanding levels of student achievement to see student data click here.
A real feature of our school is the fact that we are a truly community school. The parent community values education and expectations are high. Our students are supported by an active Parent Support Group (PSG) that works tirelessly to support our students by raising funds to provide the 'extras'. In 2009 the PSG contributed $20000 to the schools funds. The Board of Trustees is a professional, forward thinking group that is committed to student achievement. The Komiti Awhina/Community Support Group is a group that was established to work in the best interests of our maori students. In 2009 the brief of the group was expanded, and while the unique position of maori is retained, the group is now more representative of the range of cultures we have in our school.
Our students have a range of sporting and cultural opportunities. Parents are heavily involved in the coaching and management of teams and groups. The major sporting codes are catered for. We have a large kapahaka group that in 2009 featured 98 students.
Class sizes are extremely favourable. Classrooms are well resourced with settled and focused students. Quality teaching and learning is enhanced through the use of ICT. A fully equipped Computer Suite is in operation. Students have access to an InterWrite interactive whiteboard and desktop computers in each of our 16 classrooms.
Professional, talented teachers lead students in their learning. We have a great mixture within our staff of age, gender, experience and interests. As our teachers are learners, professional learning is a key focus in our school. We remain committed to having teachers of the very best quality in-front of our students each and everyday.
At Gisborne Central School the playground is busy with active, friendly students engaging in positive play. A detailed Student Management Plan empowers our students to make positive choices. The few issues we have are of a minor nature – our culture is special in this day and age and we are committed to retaining it!
The focus on student learning allows us to rightly claim that EDUCATION IS CENTRAL in all that we do here at our school.
